Topic & Presenter: – “Ebola & My Story” – Kent Brantly, MD

Kent Brantly, MD is a Family Medicine physician, who served as a medical missionary at ELWA Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia, from October 2013 to August 2014. Dr. Brantly received his Medical Degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine Residency and Fellowship in Maternal Child Health with Advanced Training in Obstetrics at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.

After arriving in Liberia, Dr. Brantly served as a full spectrum family physician, practicing inpatient and outpatient medicine and pediatrics as well as high risk obstetrics. He also served as the physician liaison for the HIV treatment program at ELWA hospital and participated in training with the National AIDS Control Program.

While serving in Liberia in the spring of 2014, Dr. Brantly found himself fighting on the front lines of the battle against the deadliest Ebola outbreak to ever occur. In early July Samaritan’s Purse, the organization for which Dr. Brantly worked, took over responsibility for the clinical care of Ebola patients for the entire nation of Liberia. Dr. Brantly was appointed as Medical Director for what would become the only Ebola Treatment Unit in all of southern Liberia.

On July 26, he was diagnosed with Ebola Virus Disease, which set off a firestorm of media attention. Dr. Brantly became the first person in the world to receive the experimental drug Zmapp, and the first person with Ebola to be treated in the United States when he was evacuated to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He considers it a privilege and duty to speak out on behalf of the people of West Africa who continue to suffer from the scourge of Ebola.

Dr. Brantly currently serves as the Medical Missions Advisor for Samaritan’s Purse. He and his wife Amber, along with their two children, are based in Texas. Come hear Kent Brantly’s story of self-sacrifice on behalf of the underserved in West Africa and God’s grace in saving His life. An evening of fellowship, challenge and inspiration.

In addition to Dr. Brantly our CMDA Spring Event will include:

  • Student Testimonies – Indiana University medical & dental students and Marian University medical students.
  • El Salvador Medical Mission Report – You will also hear a brief report from our students and doctors who recently returned from a Medical Mission Trip to El Salvador. Student travel expenses were in part funded by scholarship awards from the Charles & Loraine Kelley Mission Fund.
